Since the invention of dishwashers in the 1850s by Joel Houghton, the dishwasher has been an “in need” appliance. By the 1950s, we saw the appliance become very popular and by the 1970s they were in every home.

When I was a kid, we had a model that rolled out of the pet room, guess what we had in there? You plugged it in, attached a hose to the kitchen faucet, turned on the water and voila your dishes would be clean in about 6 hours. Just like we do now, you would set it up for a night run. It was not quiet, but you didn’t have to do the dishes. Of course now you can find them under the counter, super quiet, with options to set and delay the wash, and do a quick rinse or a heavy load. The dishwasher had really become a staple of all kitchens.

The dishwasher can also be in a drawer! I love to use these in a butler’s pantry or a secondary kitchen, in a bonus room or guest house. They are smaller and very efficient. They can be a single or a double drawer, allowing you to wash a small load in one or load them both for a large load. The choice of using a single drawer dishwasher in a butler’s pantry would allow you to have a drawer underneath for additional storage.

The next cool thing on the docket is the countertop dishwasher. This dishwasher does 3-4 place settings in one wash. Perfect for a single person or small family. The debate is you lose counter space, but you would gain a cabinet. When you look at the design of the kitchen, the cabinet may win out over the counter space. This dishwasher needs three quarts of water to run and is super-efficient. I feel this would be perfect for areas and regions that are short on water. The model I was learning about is called Tetra.
With all appliances a little research goes a long way. Understanding your needs and what you are looking for is the key to success. Ask yourself, “How do I live in my space and what do I need to make it the best?”
